BREC Academy
is certified by the Virginia Dept. of Education to
operate as schools for students identified as ED,
LD, MR and/or OHI. The goal of the therapeutic day
program is to provide students with the necessary
academic and social skills to enable them to
return to their regular school system. Academic
goals are taken from Standards of Learning for
Virginia Public Schools and individualized for
each student's level of achievement, interest and
learning style. Based on their age, abilities and
individual goals, students are placed in one of
the following curriculums: Elementary, Middle,
Secondary, Graded Remedial or GED Preparation.
Through group and individual counseling sessions
with a Masters prepared counselor, students
address social development and individual issues.
Family support services are also available through
weekly parent support groups and periodic family
conferences. Additionally, a psychiatrist trained
in the treatment of children and adolescents
provides regular consultation for the behavioral
and medical needs of each student. Regular contact
is maintained with parents by telephone and
periodic conferences. Each student's Local
Education Authority receives quarterly grade
reports, a mid-year comprehensive progress report
and an instructional summary at the end of the
student's enrollment.
