Shenandoah Academy

Shenandoah Academy opened in August, 2003 as an alternative educational program for identified emotionally disturbed students unable to succeed in programs available within public schools, but who do not require a more restrictive residential program. Located in Harrisonburg, VA., Shenandoah Academy is situated to serve children from Warren County to Highland County and Rockingham to Albemarle County including the counties of Page, Shenandoah, Rockbridge, Augusta and Greene and the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Front Royal, Waynesboro and Charlottesville.

The Program

Shenandoah Academy is an accredited Therapeutic Day School licensed to serve Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Disabled, Intellectually Disabled and Other Health Impaired students. The goal of the school is to provide its students with the necessary academic and social skills to enable them to return to their regular school program. Academic goals are taken from Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools and individualized for each student’s level of achievement, individual interests and learning style.

The Staff

Professional staff consists of collegiate and master level educators certified by the Virginia Dept. of Education and endorsed in Emotional Disturbance and Learning Disabilities or Mental Retardation. Instructional support staff work closely with each teacher to assist in the implementation of instructional and behavioral programs. A counselor, specifically trained to work with children and adolescents, brings a clinical background to the behavioral program by providing individual and group counseling.
