Shenandoah Academy

Shenandoah Academy opened in August, 2003 as an alternative educational program for identified emotionally disturbed students unable to succeed in programs available within public schools, but who do not require a more restrictive residential program. Located in Harrisonburg, VA., Shenandoah Academy is situated to serve children from Warren County to Highland County and Rockingham to Albemarle County including the counties of Page, Shenandoah, Rockbridge, Augusta and Greene and the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Front Royal, Waynesboro and Charlottesville.

The Program

Shenandoah Academy is certified by the Virginia Dept. of Education to operate as schools for students identified as ED, LD, MR and/or OHI. The goal of the therapeutic day program is to provide students with the necessary academic and social skills to enable them to return to their regular school system. Academic goals are taken from Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools and individualized for each student's level of achievement, interest and learning style. Based on their age, abilities and individual goals, students are placed in one of the following curriculums: Elementary, Middle, Secondary, Graded Remedial or GED Preparation. Through group and individual counseling sessions with a Masters prepared counselor, students address social development and individual issues. Family support services are also available through weekly parent support groups and periodic family conferences. Regular contact is maintained with parents by telephone and periodic conferences. Each student's Local Education Authority receives quarterly grade reports, a mid-year comprehensive progress report and an instructional summary at the end of the student's enrollment.

The Staff

Professional staff consists of collegiate and master level educators certified by the Virginia Dept. of Education and endorsed in Emotional Disturbance and Learning Disabilities or Mental Retardation. Instructional support staff work closely with each teacher to assist in the implementation of instructional and behavioral programs. A counselor, specifically trained to work with children and adolescents, brings a clinical background to the behavioral program by providing individual and group counseling.
